Dance

Samsara, inspired by the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, traces the steps we take, both forward and backward, in search of our higher selves. Drawing on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy, it explores some of the 81 obstacles and 6 states of mind that can hold us back. Epic mythological storytelling merges with personal experience and anecdote from two globally opposite perspectives, in a highly visual landscape. ing on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy, it explores some of the 81 obstacles and 6 states of mind that can hold us back. "Technical, rigorous, virtuosic and transporting, Samsara is at once hugely theatrical and deeply private... Meanwhile, back on the roadless road, Dr Yaron Abulafia’s lighting design is itself a form of dance. More than simple fx or colourful atmos, it is exactly what a theatrical device should be, adding without being intrusive, building without crowding out. ‘Pure genius’ would not be overstating it."

"Yaron Abulafia’s lighting design is stunning and sensitively attuned to the work. The stage becomes a sacred space with square light walls mimicking the architecture of temples and tombs, or patterned light creating a mosaic tile effect. Often, the light feels viscous as the dancers reach into it, scooping it up and letting it drip from their bodies. There’s a sense of monastic reverence in the lighting. At one point, a thick sheet of light becomes the backdrop, shrouding the musicians."
